Fifth Disease

fifthdiseaseOne of the Chipmunks has had a suspected case of Fifth Disease.   Please see the chart below for the signs & symptoms as per the Toronto Public Health website from their Day Nursery Resources section.  Please visit links for more information.  It is important to note the risk factors for pregnant women exposed to Fifth Disease.  All the information is also posted on the health board at the school.

Disease
Fifth Disease Also known as”Slapped Cheek” erythema infectiosum(Parvovirus B19)

Signs & Symptoms
A very red rash on a child’s cheeks (slapped face appearance). A red, lace-like rash develops on torso and arms, then over the rest of the body. Rash may itch occasionally. May have low-grade fever, malaise, or a mild cold before rash starts. Rash may last 1 to 3 weeks.

Transmission
Contact: Direct contact with respiratory secretions.

Infectious Period
Several days before the appearance of the rash. Not infectious once rash appears.

Exclude from Daycare?
No – If child feels well enough to participate.
